HI Teri,

Great to have you here! Feel free to start a new discussion any time (see above to do that), and we'll chime in. My own kids are older - the youngest is 14, and the oldest is 20, and I've got two stepchildren, ages 18 and 20. In a few short weeks (about 10, to be exact) I will be a grandmother for the first time. Treasure those days when they are young, because they grow up fast!

Hi fellow moms! I wanted to say "hello" instead of lurking since I've just joined the group. I am mother to Emilyn (4) and Micah (19 months) and live in the beautiful north Georgia mountains. I'm looking forward to sharing in discussions pertaining to one of my very favorite thiings: motherhood! :-)

Hello Moms!
Sorry it's been a while since I've written, but I feel like I am finally settled into my new home in CO! I love being a Sr. Pastor (although I hate that title!) My boys are adjusting....the youngest better than the oldest, but that's a story for another day! I am sooooo excited for Christmas because after the Christmas Eve service I am going to go to bed and whenever I wake up I am going to load the boys and we're going to meet my husband in Salina KS where we will head to Dallas together and then he'll be moving back to CO with us for good! I think we made the right decision to move ahead of him, but I function better with him around. We are more balanced when we're all together. Well, to you all, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas season with your family and friends. Allow yourselves time to receive the gift of love and then just say "thank you!" Merry Christmas!

PS - I love Diana's ideas too. And also, I forgot to wish you safe travels. You may already be on your way. We'll keep you and your family in your thoughts and prayers!

Susan,

We moved when my son was 6. He had some 'adjustment issues' - a little bit of acting out in school, nothing serious. But I did have him see a counselor for a period of a few months to help him and also to help me, as his parent, to know how to help him. So my advice is to seek outside help if you need it, even if things aren't major. It can't hurt.

Moving at age 11 is something I have experience with. It was difficult. Sixth grade was a tough year and it took me a while to find real friends. I think the best thing you can do is to really keep the lines of communication open with your 6th grader. Schedule time to go get ice cream, or to do other small things where you can talk. Even the time driving in the car around town is good for those 'casual' conversations where parents do a bit of checking in. Also, you don't want to be a helicopter mom but make some connections at the school (is it middle school or elementary?) And help your 6th grader stay in touch with the old friends, whether that's via phone, computer, etc.

Ours weren't very old when we moved--they were 4 and 2 1/2.

We had painted a bear ("the Watch Bear") on our 4-year-old's bedroom wall in our old house, to give her a sense of security when she made the transition from a toddler bed to a bigger bed, in a larger room.

When we got in the car to make the drive to our new home, we told our daughter that we had put her Watch Bear back into the paint cans and would bring him out at the new house. When we arrived, we painted an identical bear on the wall of her new room.

She made the transition to the new house just fine.

However, I realize that moving is much harder with children who are older and who have made friends in their old neighborhood and school...

I'm sorry I have nothing to offer that might help...except suggesting that you let your children pick out some new, fun things with which to decorate their rooms (new posters, race car bed, special borders, a cool lamp, etc.). Or start a new, fun tradition at the new house that your kids get to help with, like game night or night walks with flashlights, planting a tree, etc.

Have any of you moms ever moved your family? Do you have tips for a mom who is moving a 7 year old (2 grader) and an 11 year old (6th grader.) We move in 2 days to CO. My husband will move a couple months after us...after he finishes up the year at the church he's serving. My 7 year old is a free spirit who is very excited about the move; however, I realize it still might be stressful on him and I want to know what "stress signs" to watch for. My 11 year old is a bit more tenative about the move. He likes to understand everything and the loss of control that comes with this move is effecting him more. Anyway, any tips you can offer are appreciated! Thanks moms.

Susan - congrats on the senior pastorate position. Have you already begun there? I hope you find a great robe too. I know many congregations don't have their ministers wear robes, but personally I like to. I received several beautiful stoles and my white robe as ordination gifts, and I wear them whenever I can. Anyway, happy shopping. Post a pic for us of you in your new robe, when it arrives!

Thanks Rebecca! Women Spirit is the company I was trying to remember. I am very excited. To date I only own an "oatmeal" colored alb. I have been wanting a black robe and now that I have been called to my first Sr. pastorate...I think the time is right!

The Clergy group might also be a good place to post the question - sorry, I can't remember which companies were at GA! Someone there might know.
